Dr. Jerome Goddard, currently at the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, began compiling a current list of Mississippi mosquitoes in the late 1990’s.  He relied mainly on previous (military or health department) data, especially an unpublished Master’s thesis by Harry Fulton at MSU in the early 1970’s.  Additionally, collection records from the Mississippi Entomological Museum (MEM) were used. However, the majority of distribution records used to generate the annotated list of mosquito species are the result of extensive collecting conducted by Dr. Goddard and personnel at the Mississippi Department of Health from 2003 to 2007 throughout much of the state using CO2-baited CDC light traps and larval dipping.  A health department contract mosquito surveillance technician (M’Lee Hoyt Loe) also collected several thousand specimens from around the state from 2001 to 2003.  Wendy C. Varnado came to the MDH in 2004 and was indispensible in this systematic mosquito survey.  Lastly, Dr. Bruce A. Harrison, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Public Health Pest Management Section, Winston-Salem, NC, joined us in the mosquito survey, visiting Mississippi two times to collect and identify specimens.
