Ross E. Hutchins Photo Collection


Dr. Ross E. Hutchins (1912-1983) began teaching in the Department of Entomology and Zoology at Mississippi State Universi ty (then Mississippi State College) in 1930. During more than 30 years, he served as an advisor to 33 graduate students, and from 1951 to 1963, he served as Department Head. Dr. Hutchins authored numerous magazine articles, scientific papers, and more than 40 popular books. His renowned photographs of insects and other natural history subjects were published in more than 25 popular magazines, including Natural History, The National Geographic, and Life. The Ross E. Hutchins "Nature in Pictures" photographic collection, including more than 30,000 transparencies, prints, and negatives, was donated to the Mississippi Entomological Museum, and his manuscripts and other papers were donated to University Libraries.
